Sep 27, 2015 - Obama Focuses on Corruption, Inequality & Obstacles to Sustainable Development

President Obama joined the parade of leaders addressing a United Nations session calling for the adoption of 17 Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, which range from extremely lofty goals like “end poverty in all its forms everywhere” to doable but difficult ones like “sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss”.

A Vision For Our Youth

The list of proposed Sustainable Development Goals is a UN initiative to change the World & will guide development programmes in all countries until the year 2030.

It was one of the main outcomes of the Rio+20 Conference where member States agreed to launch a process to develop a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which would build upon the Millennium Development Goals and converge with the post 2015 development agenda.

The Proposed SDGs

They are a set of development goals designed to replace the Millenium Development Goals which expired in 2015.

The SDGs we are told are an all-inclusive programme which also involves our youth, but how many of our youth today are familiar with these Sustainable Development Goals?

  1. 1. End poverty in all its forms everywhere
  2. 2. End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture
  3. 3. Ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages
  4. 4. Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all
  5. 5. Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
  6. 6. Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
  7. 7. Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all
  8. 8. Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all
  9. 9. Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation, and foster innovation
  10. 10. Reduce inequality within and among countries
  11. 11. Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable
  12. 12. Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
  13. 13. Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts (taking note of agreements made by the UNFCCC forum)
  14. 14. Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development
  15. 15. Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification and halt and reverse land degradation, and halt biodiversity loss
  16. 16. Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels
  17. 17. Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalise the global partnership for sustainable development

We should all strive to be a part of delivering this new agenda, and to hold governments and businesses accountable for their promises and commitments. We cannot stress sufficiently the importance of participation, inclusion, as well as strengthened capacities and partnerships.
